ID = OD − 2t; A = π(OD² − ID²) / 4; V = A × L; m = V × ρ; mₜ = m × qInner diameter ID = OD − 2t. Metal area A = π(OD² − ID²)/4 = πt(OD − t). Volume per piece V = A × L. Weight per metre = A × ρ; mass per piece = V × ρ; total mass = mass per piece × quantity.
Worked example
For a 50 mm outer diameter, 5 mm wall and 1 m length, the inner diameter is 40 mm and the metal area is 706.8583 mm². Carbon steel at 7,850 kg/m³ weighs approximately 5.54884 kg per metre.
How it works
The calculation subtracts the hollow circular opening from the outer circular section. Only the tube material contributes to mass and volume. The cavity and anything inside it are excluded. The factored area formula also retains precision for thin walls.
Common questions
Can I enter a nominal pipe size or schedule?
Enter the actual outer diameter and wall thickness listed in the manufacturer's dimensions. Nominal sizes and schedule designations are not direct geometric inputs.
Does the result include liquid inside the pipe?
No. Volume and weight refer only to the pipe wall material. Calculate the contents from the internal volume and their density separately.
